Why Use A Basking Spot Lamp

A basking spot lamp, or ambient air temperature lamp as they are sometimes also known, create 'hot spots' within an enclosure by heating the air around them. You can help to concentrate this heat by combining your heat lamp with shade to direct the light down onto a specific feature or area, or just let it radiate throughout the enclosure. Whichever method you choose, the lamp will help create a temperature gradient across the vivarium that allows your pet to move towards or away from the heat source depending on whether they need to increase or decrease their body temperature.

Many reptiles require a basking area to warm themselves before they will engage in other activities such as feeding and bathing. By directing your heat lamp over a specific feature such as a pile of rocks or a specific branch, you can encourage these natural behaviours. Furthermore, the correct body temperature for your pet enables them to efficiently digest their food and metabolise all those vitamins and minerals into healthy bones and organs.

How To Use This Basking Lamp

Firstly, make sure you choose the correct wattage of heat lamp for your enclosure. This will depend on the size of the vivarium and the pet your are caring for, plus which other heat sources your have set up for the vivarium. Position your lamp at the spot you've chosen in your vivarium as the hot spot. Use a lamp holder and bracket to secure it in space and then attach a heater guard to prevent your pet accidently harming itself on the hot lamp. Finally plug your heat lamp into a thermostat to control the lamp and make sure it operates within your desired temperature range.
