Why Use An Infrared Light?
Firstly, it is important to note that this is an infrared light, not a red light - some reptiles can see red light and it can distort their depth perception so isn't always recommended, whereas fewer can see the infrared spectrum and it is believed to have virtually no negative effects so is a better option if you don't want to add additional 'white light' to your enclosure.
The main advantage of an infrared lamp is that it heats the reptile, not just the reptile's skin. Whereas standard lights do produce heat (as you'll know if you've ever tried changing a recently blown household light bulb), they type of heat they produce is of a longer wavelength. It will heat a patch of skin, but the skin's natural barrier actions dissipate that heat before it can penetrate deeper into the body. Short wave infrared light can get through the skin and start to warm your pet from the inside, making it much more effective.
Which Animals Benefit From Infrared Heat Lamps?
You can use an infrared heat lamp with most desert living species including Leopard Geckos, Bearded Dragons, Collard Lizards, Fat Tailed Geckos and some Skinks.
