Why Are Dimming Thermostats Different?

Traditional thermostats are on/off units. This means when your the temperature around the probe reaches the temperature you have set the dial to, the power is turned off completely to the heating element. This then cools down a bit (the precise amount differs on the brand used) before the probe recognises the minimum temperature has been reached, causing the heating element to be turned on again. The result is that the temperature in your setup acts like waves.

In contrast, a dimming thermometer avoids the on/off wave creation by controlling the amount of power going into to heating element, flattening out the wave and keeping your terrarium temperature more stable.
