These charming, velvety green spheres are actually a form of filamentous algae that naturally grow in cool, freshwater lakes. Their soft, cushiony texture and slow growth make them ideal for enclosed environments. In terrariums, they create a serene, minimalist look and require very little maintenance.
Care Guide:
- Prefers bright to medium indirect light.
- Avoid direct sun, which can overheat the aquarium/paludarium and cause the marimo to brown.
- Keep the marimo fully submerged in clean, cool water.
- Replace the water every 1–2 weeks, or sooner if it becomes cloudy.
- Use filtered or dechlorinated water, as chlorine can damage the marimo.
- Marimo prefer cooler temperatures, ideally 5–20°C, but tolerate normal indoor conditions as long as the terrarium does not overheat.
- Gently rotate or roll the marimo every few weeks to help maintain their round shape.
- If they float, give them a gentle squeeze underwater to release trapped air.
Common Issues
- Browning or yellowing patches: Usually caused by too much light, warm water, or old water that needs changing.
- Floating marimo: Air trapped inside—gently squeeze them while submerged.
- Fuzzy or slimy coating: Indicates poor water quality; clean the marimo and refresh the water.
- Falling apart or cracking: Often due to high temperatures or extended neglect—cooler, cleaner water helps recovery.
